Samuel W. Stewart

November 1, 1933 — July 5, 2024

Indianapolis

Samuel W. Stewart, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away 11:05 pm on July 5, 2024. He was born November 1,1933 to the late John and Delta Stewart in Princeton, IN. He was an US Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a man passionate in life. God blessed him with an amazing journey. Dad was called to be a preacher when he was a youth. Thus, when he finished his career in the Air Force, he eventually entered the ministry in 1966 at Plainfield, Indiana. He was a bi-vocational pastor taking a small home missions assignment in Plainfield. He retired from Citizens Gas (now Citizens Energy Group) in November 1993 with 36 years of service as a backhoe and front end loader operator, plus a railroad engineer at the former Citizens Gas & Coke manufacturing plant on Prospect Avenue. Dad loved to fish and hunt. He grew up with his boyhood buddy, Jim Crider, and they would fish the Wabash River together, go rabbit hunting, and in later years as adults spend many fall seasons hunting deer together. Dad also was a coin collector, had a kennel of beagles, then German Shepherds, sold Amway, always had a tremendous garden, and finally his true passion raised beef cattle. He had several repeat customers because the meat was always Grade A. He had learned the secret of feeding the proper mixture of grass, alfalfa hay, and grain prior to the butcher. Dad knew what grace was, and he loved sharing mercy with others, especially the less fortunate people he met and ministered to. He hardly knew a stranger. He could converse with the rich and poor. His laughter and humor were contagious. He's gone now. So we say Goodbye, but we will join you someday on the other side in the land of The Celestial City. I love you and thank you for being our Dad. Sam is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Jack) Baynes of Plainfield; a son, David (Amelia) Stewart of Wheatland, MO; two daughters-in-law, Mary Stewart of Clayton and Teresa Stewart of Poland, IN; a sister, Betty Jones of Princeton; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Stewart (8/11/2011); and two sons, Mark Stewart (4/23/2024) and James Stewart (6/2/2024). Funeral services will be at 12 Noon on Saturday, July 13, 2024 in the Calvary Bible Wesleyan Church, 168 Lawndale Dr, Plainfield, where friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until service time at 12 Noon. Burial will follow, with military honors, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield. Arrangements by Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.
