Richard Schafer, 78, of Plainfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family members on May 24, 2023. He was born in Clay County, Indiana on October 21, 1944 to the late Carl and Mary Louise Schafer. Richard is a Clay City High School and Purdue University graduate where he was a member of the Purdue All American Marching Band. He is an Indiana Army National Guard veteran. Richard worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. He then worked for Co-Alliance after retirement for 10 years. Richard was a member of the First Baptist Church in Plainfield for 48 years, where he served in various roles. He enjoyed wood working, boating, bicycling, playing card games, and traveling in his free time. Richard and Margaret camped throughout the United States and Canada. They enjoyed many great adventures traveling the world together during their retirement. Richard loved spending time with family and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church (1012 Stafford Road, Plainfield, IN 46168) where friends may visit from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Schafer; daughter, Beth (Jim) Malone; son, Brian (Sonna) Schafer; sister, Judy German; grandchildren, Brian (Annie), Austin (Kasey), Ashlyn, Tyler and Carter; great grandchild, Kora Louise.
