Lonnie Edward Hefner, 77, of Avon passed away on Saturday August 27, 2022, at IU West Avon Indiana surrounded by his family. Lonnie was born November 22, 1944, in Granite City IL, the son of Evelyn Verlena (Cadwell) Hefner and Louie P Sr. Growing up he was active in choir and glee club and played flute at Sullivan High School. He worked at Lucy Ellen Candies where a young lady named Carol caught his eye. He officially met his future wife while working as a lifeguard at Wyman Park in Sullivan IL. He attended Wheaton College for one year before transferring to Illinois State University. Lonnie and Carol Ann Miller were married June 5, 1965. Lonnie graduated college in 1969 and they moved to Indiana so he could pursue a career with Public Service of Indiana (PSI). He worked for PSI through two mergers to Cinergy and finally Duke Energy for 37 years before retiring. After retiring he worked another 3 years for Hoosier Energy. Lonnie was always on the go. He and Carol traveled across the country and world, visiting Israel, Hawaii, Alaska, and especially Florida. Lonnie enjoyed the beach and being in or around the water. He loved eating out or grilling for his wife and family. He loved to host family gatherings where he won almost every card game and was always quick with a joke or calling “pie break”. He had a sharp mind and a quick wit. Lonnie and Carol were one of the first people to open a suntan business in Indiana and he worked 16+ hours a day to make it successful. He enjoyed golfing with friends and was an avid reader of military, crime, and suspense novels. He volunteered with Cub Scouts, Junior Achievement, marching band for his sons, and Habitat for Humanity. He was an active member of the church where he lived. Most recently he was a member of Church at the Crossing in Indianapolis. He is survived by his wife Carol; two sons; Jason (Jennifer) Hefner, Eric Hefner, 5 grandchildren; Justin, Michael, Matthew, Alexandria, and Zachary; his two sisters; Judy Cornell, and Janet (Larry) Jamison; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; plus his other son, Santiago Troncar, from Argentina that the family hosted in high school. Most importantly he loved his wife, sons, and grandchildren and they loved him back. He will be missed for the rest of their lives. Visitation will be at Hampton Gentry Funeral Home located at 106 Shaw St, Plainfield IN 46168 on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at Church at the Crossing located at 9111 Haverstick Rd Indianapolis, IN 46240 at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 1, 2022, with calling one hour prior to service.
