Joyce A. Mayes

Joyce A (Hurt, Medsker) Mayes, 89, passed away on June 30, 2024, in Plainfield, Indiana. She was born on June 17, 1935, in Edinburgh, Indiana to Ray and Elma Hurt. She graduated from Martinsville High School in 1953 and went on to work as a Press Operator at McQuay-Norris in Indianapolis for ten of years. She later was hired by Indiana Bell Telephone in September 1967 as a Drafting Clerk and later retired as the Budget Engineer in February 1991. She married Claude Medsker of Mooresville on September 5, 1953 and together they had two children, Jerry Medsker and Michael Medsker. After Claude passed away on August 6, 1994, she later married Dick Mayes of Indianapolis on January 8, 2000, who proceeded her in death on October 6, 2022.  Joyce was known for her generosity and was loved by many for easy going attitude and angelic personality. She enjoyed oil painting and teaching painting in her free time, as well as her quick efforts to help others. She will be remembered for being a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years and a member in good standing with the Englewood Chapter #483,  and being named the first female non-degree Engineer at Indiana Bell Telephone Company.  Joyce is survived by her two sons, Jerry of Indianapolis and Michael of Columbia, South Carolina), and her stepdaughter Donna Hutchens of Plainfield; two sisters, Opal Hensley-Varner of St. Charles, Missouri and Carol Boling of Martinsville and seven grandchildren. Her great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren were the delight of her life.   A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 6, 2024 in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, where friends may call on Saturday from 10:30 am until service time at 12:00 noon.  A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall, IN.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Plainfield, 1012 Stafford Road, Plainfield, IN 46168.
