John N. Simpson

John Simpson, 87 years old, passed away December 9, 2018 at Hendricks Community Hospital.  John was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 11, 1931 to his loving parents, John Mitchell and Nola Shake Simpson. He attended schools in Terre Haute and Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois.  He then came back to Terre Haute to attend Rose Polytechnic Institute graduating in 1953, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was a registered professional engineer and registered professional land surveyor in Indiana.  He was also a lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Indiana Water Resources Association.  John married Elsie Workman on October 2, 1954. They had four wonderful children, Deborah Wooden, David Simpson, Jim Simpson and Diana Lautenschlager, who in turn gave them thirteen beautiful grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.  John loved the Church, his family, and enjoyed the outdoors.  He worked at the Department of Natural Resources in Indianapolis for 37 ½ years, retiring in 1999.  John was the Director of Water for ten years, during which time he received many awards. John and Elsie made their home in Plainfield, Indiana for 64 years. They were devoted members of the Plainfield Church of Christ where John served as an elder for 29 years.  Funeral services will be Friday, December 14, 2018 at 11:00 am in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home.  Visitation will be Thursday, December 13, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home.  Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.  John is survived by his wife Elsie of 64 years, his children Debbie (Jeff) Wooden of Collierville, Tennessee, David (Beth) Simpson of Collierville, Tennessee, Jim (Lynn) Simpson of Plainfield, Diana (Jim) Lautenschlager of Plainfield.  His sister Sharon (Bill) Doyle of Bloomington.  His thirteen grandchildren include: Ross Wooden and Ryan Wooden both of Collierville, Tennessee; Nathan Simpson, Joelle Harvey, Joshua Simpson, Jaclyn Simpson all of Collierville, Tennessee; Brendon Simpson, Kyle Simpson, Taryn Holt, and Greg Simpson all of Plainfield; Jenna Lautenschlager, Jamie Lautenschlager and Jessica Lautenschlager all of Plainfield and fourteen great-grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of John Simpson to the Dementia Society of America by mail to PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901, or online www.dementiasociety.org/donate.
