Eugene "Gene" R. Young

Eugene “Gene” R. Young, 93, of Plainfield, passed away on March 9, 2023 surrounded by his loving family members. He was born on October 8, 1929 in Swayzee, Indiana to the late Harden and Lila Young. Gene was a United States Army veteran serving in Korea. He graduated from General Motors Institute and received his masters degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Gene worked as a senior project engineer for Allison Gas Turbine and retired in 1990 after 41 years of service.  Gene met and married the love of his life, Janet Legg in 1952. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.  Gene was a faithful member of Plainfield United Methodist Church since 1958. He was an active member of the Plainfield Lions Club.  Gene enjoyed sharing the cabin he built at Rocky Fork Lake with family and friends. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and especially the Purdue basketball team.  Most important to him was being a gentle, loving caregiver to his family.  Gene was preceded in death by his brothers, Newell, Herbert, Floyd and Warren Young; grandchild Leah, Michelle Harman. A celebration of life will be Friday, March 17, 2023 at 1 PM in the Plainfield United Methodist Church, 600 Simmons St., Plainfield, IN 46168 where friends may visit from 11 AM until the time of service at 1pm. Survivors include his loving wife, Janet Young, son, Kyle (Kimberly), Young, daughters; Julie (Larry) Harman and Angela (Mike) Thomas; brother Keith Young; grandchildren; Nathan, Lindsay, Sarah, Seth, Kelly and Laura. Seven great grandchildren with one on the way!  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Plainfield United Methodist Church Missions or the Plainfield Lions Club.
