David Jay Abplanalp 77, a proud veteran of the United States Army passed away October 4, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 28, 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The son of the late Elmer G. and Dorothy M. (Rohlfing) Abplanalp he grew up in Plainfield, Indiana. A member of the Plainfield High School class of 1963 and a graduate of Indiana State University in 1967. Dave joined the US Army and served during Vietnam. He received The Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service for his service against hostile forces while fighting in Vietnam while assigned to Company E, 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade as a Forward Observer. He had numerous medals and accommodations, including Military Merit, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 DVC, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, expert rifle, machine gun and marksman. Dave is proceeded in death by a daughter Debbie Jordan. Surviving is his son David W. Abplanalp (Kyndall), grandson David J. "DJ" Abplanalp, of Avon, Indiana, granddaughter Dia Jordan (Justin), great granddaughter Leah Fedor of New York, brother Donald (Anita) Abplanalp of Salem, Oregon as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dave enjoyed golf with his long-time golfing buddies as well as playing poker and both watching and talking about sports. His favorite sport was whichever one his grandson was currently playing. He was teaching his former daughter in law about Super Bowl 3 just days prior to his passing. A true sports enthusiast and had an amazing memory for statistics. Dave was passionate about many things in life and was never afraid to give you his opinion whether you liked it or not. However, that was one of his endearing qualities. He was the ultimate patriot. He fought for and loved his Country to the very end of his life. He will have a full military honors ceremony at Indiana Veteran's Memorial Cemetery located at 1415 N. Gate Rd. Madison, Indiana on October 24, 2022 at 12:00 Noon. A very special thank you to Kenny Simpson and Richard Flint for their assistance in getting Dave to his doctor’s appointments. We would also like to thank the many nurses, doctors, and staff at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis, IN as well as the caregivers through hospice including the compassionate nurses for their care, kindness and professionalism.
