Elsie L. Garris, 77, of Plainfield, passed away at the Avon Health and Rehab on Wednesday October 20, 2010. She had been ill with Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy for 3 years. She was born May 9, 1933 in Elkhart, KS to the late William and Etheal Tubbs. Elsie Tubbs married Robert Garris on July 27, 1958. Survivors include her husband Robert; three daughters, Rebecca (David) Perry, Teresa (Greg) Mershon, and Sharon (David) Wallace; a son, Paul (Kim) Garris; a sister, Kookie McGuire; 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Elsie was a graduate of Harding HS, Marion, OH. She attended Anderson University and was a graduate of Grant School of Nursing, Columbus, OH and the IUPUI School of Nursing. Elsie was employed as a nurse at the Hendricks Regional Health, Visiting Nurse Service and the Hendricks County Health Department. Her husband was a minister in the Friends Church and Elsie was also active in the ministry. She was the church musician, playing both their piano and organ and also directed children's choirs and musicals. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and visiting meetings and churches during the years her husband served as General Superintendent of Western Yearly Meeting of the Friends Church. Elsie lived her later years challenged with health concerns. She maintained a smile and positive outlook on life strengthened by her faith and the support of family and friends. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff of Avon Health and Rehab for the care given to Elsie and the support and hospitality given to the family, and to members of Plainfield Friends Meeting and Western Yearly Meeting for their love and concern over the years. Memorial services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday November 20, 2010 in the Western Yearly Meeting, 203 S. East St. Plainfield, with calling one hour prior to services. Additional calling will be on Friday, November 19 at the Plainfield Friends Meeting, 105 S. East St. from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Contributions may be made to the Quaker Haven Camp, 111 EMS D16C Lane, Syracuse, IN 46567.
