John H. Barnes, 85, of Clayton, went to be with the Lord May 24, 2010 at Plainfield Health Care Center. He was born March 20, 1925 to the late Robert O. and Iva Mae (Kemp) Barnes in Maywood, IN. He was one of twelve children. John served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Sitkoh Bay. He drove for Kingans Hygrade for 20 years when they closed and then later he drove for Roadway Express for 17 years until he retired in 1986. His biggest joy was spending time with his 9 grandchildren Jennifer (Jim) Flick, Melissa (David) Lycan, Derek, Dustin, Darrin, Julia, Matthew, Meagan, and Jeffrey Barnes, and 3 great grandchildren, Austin and Collin Flick and Avery Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Laverne (Hill) Barnes, whom he married on May 22, 1947. He is also survived by his four children, John (Jan) Barnes of Bloomington, Cathy (Ron) Ulstad of Ft. Dodge, IA, Mike Barnes of Cartersburg and Tom (Karen) Barnes of Minden, NE: a brother, Kenneth Barnes; and a sister, Martha Silliman. He was past vice chairman of the Hendricks County Democratic Committee. John was a member of the Belleville United Methodist Church, 5616 S. Morgan St., where services will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be on Monday, May 31, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Awareness Association.
