Edward E. Whalen, 81 of Plainfield IN was called home by his heavenly Father on October 26, 2009. Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lou Wilson Whalen, his brother Donald Whalen of Sacramento, CA, his son E. Alan Whalen, daughter-in-law Lynda Sue, his daughter Linda Ann McLarty, son-in-law Thomas McLarty, grandchildren Amber Larkin and Andrew Larkin, step-grandchildren Angela Bell, Christy Personett, Scott McLarty, 2 step-great-grandchildren, 4 nephews and 1 niece. He is preceded in death by his sister Joann Whalen Gray.
Ed met his life long sweetheart, Mary Lou, in high school and they were married in 1948.
He graduated from Crawfordsville High School, attended Wabash College and later was awarded a Key from the Graduate School of Savings & Loan from Indiana University.
Ed started his banking career while working in his hometown of Crawfordsville for 9 years and then in 1961 he and Mary Lou moved with their two children to Plainfield where Ed spent the next 34 years as President and CEO of Lincoln Federal Savings Bank.
He was also active in many business and community organizations. Ed served as Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Trustee of the National Savings & Loan Retirement Fund, was a Governor appointee to the Indiana Housing Board, a member of the Legislative Committee of United States League of Savings Institutions, President of the Indiana Savings & Loan League, Chairman of the Board of the Savings and Loan Service Bureau of Indiana, was the Founder and President of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce and was Director of On-line Financial Services in Oak Brook, IL. He also served the town of Plainfield by being active in the Plainfield Community Values Awareness Program, and was Director of the Greater Plainfield Community Foundation.
While Ed’s list of professional achievements is impressive he found the most joy in spending time with his family & beloved dogs, vacationing in Tennessee with Mary Lou and his annual fishing trips with many close friends and relatives. He also greatly enjoyed working with the congregation at Plainfield Christian church where he served in many capacities including Elder, Finance Committee Chairman and new building committee chairman.
Visitation will be Thursday Oct. 29th at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home in Plainfield from 3 – 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Plainfield Christian Church Friday Oct. 30th at 11 am. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Crawfordsville, IN.
