Dean Franklin Turner, 81, of Plainfield, passed away October 25, 2009 after a brief illness. Dean was born October 19, 1928 in Vermillion County to the late Dana and Audrey (Boswell) Turner. He graduated from Tangier High School in 1947 and moved to Hendricks County where he met his wife Carolyn Gabel Turner. They were married June 25, 1950 and were lifetime farmers in Hendricks County. Dean was very involved with the 4-H program at the local and state levels. He was a Director of the Hendricks County Fair Board for 36 years. He was also a past director of the Indiana State Fair Board and State Fair Commission and was actively involved with the Indiana Association of County and District Fairs where he was also elected into their Hall of Fame in 1990. Dean was very active in his community. He was a past member of the Avon School board having served 10 years and was currently the President of the Holding Corporation for Avon Schools. He had served on the Hendricks County Planning Commission, the Hendricks County Extension Board, past President of the Hendricks County Holding Corporation for the 4-H Fairgrounds and currently was serving on the County Board of Health and as president of the Sheriff's Merit Board. In 1974, Dean was the first Democrat in many years elected as a Hendricks County Councilman. He was also a member of the Plainfield Rotary Club, and a member of the Plainfield Friends Church where he had served in various leadership roles. Dean is survived by his wife Carolyn of 59 years and their children Cindy (Roy) Simmons of Plainfield, Dean Jr. "Rocky" (Cindy) Turner of Plainfield and LuAnne Turner of Newburgh, IN. Dean also had three grandchildren, Adriane Turner, Ryan Simmons, and Gabel Turner. In addition to Dean's immediate family, he is survived by six siblings: Margaret (Danny) Ballard of Clayton, Thelma (George) Roth of Lebanon, Charles (Barbara) Turner of Austin, TX, Helen Thomas of Danville, Russell (Ginny) Turner of Centerville, and Bonnie (Mike) O'Neill of Indianapolis and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, October 29, 2009 in the Plainfield Friends Church. Calling will be from 3:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday October 28 in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield. Burial, Maple Hill Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dean's name be made to the Hendricks County Community Foundation, the Plainfield Friends Church, and the Hendricks County 4-H program.
