Abby Van Demark

Abby Van Demark, 77, of Plainfield, passed away July 17, 2015. She was born April 16, 1938 to the late Julian and Mary Phyllis Polk in Vincennes, IN. Her childhood years were spent in Oaktown, IN and she graduated from Twelve Mile High School. She received her BA from IU in 1959. She did her student teaching at Van Buren Elementary School in Plainfield. She worked in the activities department at Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis. She returned to teaching and taught 4th grade at Hall Elementary in Monrovia for 9 years retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority and a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church (710 E. Buchanan St., Plainfield) where she was involved in Christian Education, the Wednesday Lunch Program, the Drama Program, various committees, and served as the librarian and newsletter contributor. She loved antiques, gardening, and cooking. Abby is survived by her husband Douglas Van Demark, whom she married on June 6, 1959. She is also survived by a son, H. Douglas Van Demark III; a daughter, Kristin P. (Neil) May; her adopted mother, Mary Evelyn (Bond) Polk; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer May (Bob) Waite; Joseph May, Thomas Bradford (Melissa), Eric Daniel, and Eli Robert Van Demark; and 5 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 in the St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Plainfield, where friends may call one hour prior to services. A luncheon will follow the services at the church. Contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements by Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.
