Wilfred J. Heald

Wilfred Joseph Heald, 98, of Plainfield, passed away December 10, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove. He was born to Everett D. and Clara (Peacock) Heald in Springville, IA on May 6, 1910 and more recently resided at Forest Creek Commons in Indianapolis. He was a member of the Plainfield Friends Meeting most of his life and an over 50 year member of the Plainfield Masonic Lodge #653. Wilfred was married to Doris Hardin on August 27, 1936, and she preceded him in death on June 10, 2000, after 63 years of marriage. Wilfred attended Sugar Grove Friends School south of Plainfield and graduated from Olney Friends Boarding School in Barnesville, OH. He was a lifelong farmer and mechanic and loved to ride motorcycles and drive go-carts on the slick track at Plainfield. He worked for a garage in Franklin, IN in 1936 and then for a garage in Plainfield starting in 1937. He worked as a troubleshooter mechanic for Greyhound Bus Corporation during WWII, farmed for a while then worked as a trouble-shooter mechanic for PSI (Duke Energy) in Plainfield. After retirement from there he continued to repair lawn mowers, motorcycles, tractors and about anything people wanted fixed. He had a delightful sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with family and friends and medical staff who attended him. He is survived by his 6 daughters, Myrna (Donald) Peacock of Winchester, IN, Karen (David) Coon of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Nita Bogart of Kualapuu, HI, Diana Hall in Indianapolis, Eileen Heald of Hill City, SD, and Evelyn (Dennis) Danner of Roanoke, VA; 15 grandchildren, Denise (Ron) Gaskins of Greencastle, Debbie Schaefer of Calabash, NC, Rick (Becky) Hallatt of Mooresville, Mike (Betsy) Hallatt of Danville, Chris(Carla) Peacock, Jon(Brenda) Peacock, and Rose (Randy) Myers all of Winchester, IN, Gail (Donald) Whitten of Belvedere Center, VT, Alan (Amanda) Bogart of Cordova, TN, Lorraine (Chris) Sercer and Jeff (Jo) Mongan of Plainfield, Jenee (Fred) Oldfather, and James (Mary) Wilson of Indianapolis, Andrea (Chris) Scholta of Richmond, VA, and Ryan (Colleen) Danner of Herndon, VA and all their children (18 great grandchildren) and 45 great great grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Thomas Hoover of Athens, GA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, his son Alan Wilfred Heald, and two grandsons, Jason Wilson and Kyle Schaefer, his sister Mamie Hoover and his 5 brothers, Raymond, Loren, Herman, Floyd and Morris Heald. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, where friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Friday December 12. Burial, Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Plainfield Friends Meeting or the Plainfield Masonic Lodge.
