Virgil Isaac Shockley, 81, of Indianapolis, IN passed away January 13, 2015. He was born July 14, 1933 to the late Orville and Martha (Fox) Shockley in Clermont, IN. Virgil graduated from Ben Davis High School and later received his Bachelor's degree in Ag Ed from Purdue. After his graduation from Purdue, he began service in the US Army stationed in Germany from 1954 to 1956. Upon his return from Germany, he married Sue Standiford, his high school sweetheart, and continued his education, receiving his MS degree in Horticulture, also from Purdue. His career was focused with over 35 years for Lawrence Township School Corp. as a Counselor, Dean of Boys, Director of Driver Education, and retiring as a science teacher. During this career he taught over 4,500 students. He enjoyed his service in the Bridgeport Lodge No. 162, F. & A.M., Murat Shriner and the Kiwanis Club in the Lawrence Chapter. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 17, 2015 in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home where friends may call from 11:00 am until service time at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, of 42 years, Carolyn Sue (Standiford) Shockley. He is survived by sons, Kirk (Wendy) Shockley and David (Jana) Shockley;daughter, Laura (Don) Kuebler;grandchildren, Allison Clock, Karey Cheak, Lauren Carpenter, Audra Kuebler, Kirby Ward, Kyle Shockley, Josh Shockley, Kevin Shockley and Krista Shockley;great grandchildren, Maclain Clock, Hudson Clock and Ford Carpenter. Virgil was an avid gardener supported by his education from Purdue and was an accomplished carpenter, electrician and plumber. He touched the lives of hundreds in the most positive manner and will be missed by his loving family and all those who knew him.
