Dr. Jack D. Summerlin, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away December 17, 2014. He was born January 27, 1926 to the late Arthur and Oveda (Robbins) Summerlin in Graycourt, SC. He was a second lieutenant in the US Navy during WWII. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and later graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He served his internship in the Panama Canal Zone and later taught at the Indiana University Medical School in the sixties. Dr. Summerlin then went into private practice as an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. He was also a Head and Neck surgeon. He did his practice primarily at Winona Hospital, but also at Community North and Methodist Hospitals. He finally retired in 2008. Among his accomplishments, he held a private pilot license. He volunteered and was on the advisory board at the Indiana School for the Deaf. Jack is survived by his wife, Katherine (Thompson) Summerlin; three sons, Don (Nancy), Scott (Donna) and Brad (Susan) Summerlin; two daughters, Laura (Jeff) Macri, and Leithia (John) Whited; a sister, Bobby Knotts; and 10 grandchildren. Services and calling will be private. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimers Association or the Indiana School for the Deaf.
