Clifford Matthew Gordon
April 28, 1936 – November 8, 2013
Clifford Gordon, 77, passed away on November 8, 2013 surrounded by his family, after a short battle with leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Margaret (“Midge”) Gordon, and his three children: Jacob Gordon and his wife Angi of Plainfield; Jessica Gordon and her boyfriend Aaron Bozsan of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky; and Maggie Thompson and her husband James of Chicago, Illinois. He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: Claire, Mia and Walker Gordon; and Jackson Thompson.
“Cliffie” was born in 1936 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Bernard and Sarah Gordon. His siblings, now all deceased, were Anthony, David and Barbara. His boyhood home was in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and he graduated from Swampscott High School in 1954. After graduation, Cliff enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served stateside as well as overseas in Okinawa, Japan.
After his military service, Cliff earned a BS in Psychology from the University of Miami, and went on to spend his career serving troubled men and boys at several correctional facilities throughout the country. He spent 25 years at the Indiana Boys’ School as the intake administrator and retired in 2003.
Cliff was a valued member of the Plainfield community for over 35 years, and he leaves behind a wide circle of friends and neighbors from all walks of life. He was an avid bridge player and belonged to several different bridge-a-rama groups. Cliff also loved chess and volunteered at the Avon Public Library to help young people learn to play. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and worked as a polling volunteer for over a decade. Cliff was a lifelong golfer who was out on the course just a month before he died. He was also a passionate gardener with a particular fondness for growing roses and tomatoes.
Cliff will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, which he shared generously with everyone he met. He loved people, and was always ready to see the best in them and encourage them to reach their full potential. He was much loved by his family and friends from across the country, and he will be sorely missed and always remembered.
Memorial services will be at 12:00 noon Saturday, November 16, 2013 in the Plainfield Christian Church, 800 Dan Jones Road, where friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until service time at noon.
