COL (Ret) John M. Hine . 79 of Plainfield, Indiana passed away on March 6th. John was born in Martinsville, IN, August 5th 1933 to Harold and Evelyn Hine. John grew up as a farm boy and continued to farm, run a dairy farm and raise cattle. That is where he learned his love for the land and legendary work ethic. John was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Evelyn Hine. John is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Susan (Trump) Hine, his children Brian (Ann) , Brook (Sandy), Brent (Carol) , Nicole , Micah (Clare) , and Holly Hine, step children Tom and Jon (Tammy) Utterback, Michelle (Gary) Vaughn, , and John (Julie) Chaille, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, brothers, Jerry and Herb (Melinda) Hine, and many dear friends and extended family. After graduation from Martinsville High School in 1951 he enlisted in the Indiana Army National Guard and found another love. John was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1953, and spent the next years working through the ranks. After commanding the unit in his hometown of Martinsville, he went to work for the Military Department of Indiana where he again rose through the ranks holding many esteemed positions including Director of Operations and Training and Chief of Staff, 38th Infantry Division. John retired from the Indiana National Guard as the Chief of Staff, Military Department of Indiana after serving for over 33 years. Immediately after retirement he started yet another career as the Comptroller of the Military Department of Indiana, and the Director of the Indiana Selective Service. John received many commendations, awards, medals, and recognition for his dedication and service. These duties involved many years of hard work, personal sacrifice, and time away from his family. The patriotism and discipline he learned never left him. John always enjoyed a laugh and was known for playing practical jokes. Golf was his favorite sport and loved playing rounds with friends and family near home or on extended trips. He worked at Supreme Golf, in Plainfield where he shared his joy of the game. An avid card player, he hosted many games around his table. He wasn’t a sore loser but a fierce competitor who certainly enjoyed a win. John was a member of the Plainfield Christian Church, the Council of Sagamores of the Wabash, Plainfield Eagles, Plainfield Elks, several golf clubs, and many other organizations. Visitation will be held at the Plainfield Christian Church from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14th. Memorial Service will begin at 6:00. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana.
