William Amos Stanley, 91, of Plainfield Indiana passed away peacefully at home on December 21, 2012 with his family at his side. He was born 16 December 1921 in Fairmont, WV to Myron and Ethel (Thompson) Stanley.
Bill was a true railroader; he worked for the B&O, Chessie and CSXT retiring with 30 plus years in 1982. During that time he went from Steam to Diesel and held positions as a Brakeman, Conductor, Engineer, Trainmaster and Yardmaster. Bill Served in the Army during WWII, with combat Campaign’s in New Guinea and Philippines. We always enjoyed his humorous stories, which always stared with a smile, "when I was in the Big One WWII". Bill was a life time member of the American Legion, the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE) and member of the Plainfield Christian Church.
In his youth he obtained his private pilot license; which was revoked for a short time when Bill and a friend were caught dive bombing a farmers grain silo; that was just Bill. Bill was an honest and honorable man and considered a hand shake to be a Man’s word. He was always the best dressed at any event, he refused to wear shorts, tennis shoes and labeled hats (all his hats were either plain, with maybe one railroad hat). At 91 he still had black hair and always used a little dab of Brylcream each day. It was a good trip Bill, "Highball".
He is survived by his wife Julia of (Judy) 38 years, and preceded in death by his first wife Betty Joe, brother Myron Stanley Jr. and grandson Robbie Stanley. He is survived by; Brother Robert (Rosemary) Stanley, Sisters Jean (Leonard) Overton, Martha Blizzard, Son Ronnie (Rita) Stanley, Daughter Sharon (Courtney) Cooper, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
